Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is expanding beyond Android phones. In an announcement ahead of Google I/O, the company revealed that Gemini will soon power experiences across cars, smartwatches, TVs, and even extended reality headsets.
The company aims to position Gemini at the centre, offering users helpful, hands-free interactions wherever they are.
Gemini is already available on billions of Android phones, and features like Gemini Live now work without a subscription. However, Google’s next move is to bring AI assistants to the entire Android ecosystem, including cars, smartwatches, and more.
Android Auto and cars with Google built-in will soon support Gemini, enabling more natural voice commands for navigating, communicating, and even brainstorming. Users can message friends in other languages, find taco spots along their route, or ask Gemini to summarise texts.
Users can use Gemini Live and say “Hey Google, let’s talk” to spark conversations on the go, like preparing for a meeting or getting a news rundown during a commute.
The AI assistant will launch in Android Auto-compatible vehicles in the coming months and arrive in built-in infotainment systems in models like the Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5 and Honda Passport later this year.
Smartwatches powered by Wear OS are next. Gemini will let users set reminders, translate messages, or check emails without their phone. Google emphasises natural conversation. To set a reminder, one can say instructions like “Remember I’m using locker 43 today.”
On the TV, Gemini aims to act as a helpful guide, finding age-appropriate movies, pulling up YouTube explainer videos and more. Meanwhile, Google’s partnership with Samsung is bringing Gemini to Samsung’s upcoming headset powered by Android XR, which will help users interact in immersive environments.
Gemini is also coming to earbuds, glasses, and other Android devices, promising what Google calls “personalised, powerful, and proactive help.”
Google also announced Material 3 Expressive, an update to its existing Material You UI framework with new colour theming, responsive animations, and glanceable features across phones and smartwatches. It will roll out first to Pixel devices later this year with Android 16 and Wear OS 6.
